Late Night Scare

Saturday ended up being less than restful for Liane and me. Liane had gone to bed around 10:30 and I was in the office finishing off a movie I had started watching the night before. Around 11:30 I heard a faint voice from the other room, “Warren I think I need help”. It was a miracle I even heard her over the roar of the blazing action I was engrossed in. Liane said she was feeling really weird and thought she might throw up. She was kinda disoriented and complained of being really nauseous. I ran for a pail in case she didn’t make it to the washroom. When she sat up she was seeing stars so I checked her blood sugar. It was extremely low - 1.4 mmol/L. A healthy person should have levels between 4 and 6, a healthy diabetic between 4 and 7. 2.8 or less is considered severely low.
Now Liane has occasionally been low at night before. It is very dangerous as some people don’t wake up and can lose consciousness but she has been fortunate and always wakes up early enough, usually around 3 - 4. When she wakes up low she usually has a bowl of cereal and that takes care of it. This time however her blood sugar remained low. So she drank a whole Coke. Checked her glucose level again - hardly any change, around 2.2. So she ate a Kit Kat. Still no change. She was still feeling very nauseous so she didn’t want to anything more. We resorted to pure sugar. Still no change. Never, ever in fourteen years of diabetes had she eaten so much sugar and not been able to bring her blood sugar levels up. Liane also hadn’t felt the baby move in a while and wasn’t able to wake it up. So we called Liane’s mom to come over and headed to hospital.
It seemed Liane was the only patient at the moment so she was seen by a nurse right away. The nurse who, admittedly was only doing her job, asked a ton of questions. I had to hold myself back from shouting “WE KNOW WHAT SHE NEEDS, JUST HOOK HER UP TO AN IV AND GIVE HER SOME *&^*(*# GLUCOSE!”. She did eventually start an iv and went to consult the doctor. She came back a short while later with some glucose in a tube. It was particularly nasty stuff - syrupy, wickedly sweet. She managed to get half of it down after a few gagging false starts. The nurse then brought a doppler to check on the baby. It seemed like an eternity before she was able to find the heart beat, but it sounded like baby was doing just fine, if a little sleepy from mommy’s low sugar.
We kept checking her blood sugar levels every few minutes and it started coming up nicely. She finished off the second half of glucose nastiness and a decidedly more tasty orange juice box. By around 3 a.m. her sugar was up to 7 and the doctor sent us on our merry way.
It was a scary ordeal but I know God was looking out for Mommy and Baby that night. Here’s hoping that the next such episode waits at least another fourteen years or so :)

I’ve seen these nursing covers around and thought they would be great. They are cool (I used a 100% cotton fabric) and you can see your baby (because of the boning). I also liked that (different than a receiving blanket) it has straps and baby can’t just uncover you and save you some embarrassment :)
The little triangles on the bottom are great to put your nursing pad in (that way you don’t loose them). The ones you buy online use terry cloth or flannel, so you can wipe your baby’s mouth. I find that unnecessary though and you would have to wash your cover all the time.
They sell for around $30 and so I thought I’d just make my own after looking at one. I posted a tutorial for anyone who would like to make their own.

Valentines Day

I love long weekends. It’s great having Warren home and just relax and do different things. Saturday Warren and Jillian went sledding with Dad, Keith, Heather, Rowan and Selah. From what I understand, they had a lot of fun.
In the afternoon Warren put up some mirrors I had bought a while back. I love getting projects done and have a lot more on my list. I sewed some receiving blankets that were kinda small into baby wipes, as the ones we used for Jillian were getting holes in them. I have also finished sewing curtains for Junior’s room, which I will take a picture of yet.

Mommy’s little helper

Jillian likes to help in the kitchen. She is always very proud and excited and I try to compliment her. Yes it does take a lot longer than if I would just do it myself, but I need to remind myself that this time is gonna go by way too fast and I need to enjoy it. She is very happy to have her own kitchen tools and so is mommy, as they can’t hurt her.

Fun in the Sun (and snow)

For a week in January we had very mild temperatures, which we enjoyed a lot. We built a snowman and played in the deep snow in the backyard. Jilli loved sliding down the high drifts and throwing snow at us. One thing I don’t enjoy so much is the time it takes to get dressed to go outside.

Not much to talk about in this household. Life is going by and we are trying to enjoy every minute of it.
Jilli is growing up fast and constantly learning and making us laugh. She is such a goofy little girl (just like her daddy). She is mostly happy, but does challenge us with her stubbornness. She sure knows what she wants.
She also doesn’t eat very well, all she wants to eat is meat. Seriously she can eat meat 3 times a day and she won’t touch anything else. We’ve tried bribing her, making her eat, etc. and it has caused much frustration. I hope it is just a phase and she will balance out her diet.

The pregnancy is going well. I enjoy feeling the baby move. I’m in a lot more pain than with Jillian though. Junior seems to be lying different and some days I can hardly walk.
I’m looking forward to my next ultrasound in 3 weeks. We have 4 appointments that day, one of them is for Jillian’s hernia which means we have to take her along. I’m a little bit nervous about that and hope she will stay happy.
The trips to Winnipeg are going to increase over the next few months and it is definitely harder now, as we have to find a babysitter for Jillian and I do miss her when she is gone the night before.
It is all worth it in the end though :)
